CSR: Our Environmental Impact in 2010-11 - 1st September 2011
Our CSR policy is made up of four parts: Charity, Community, Environment and People. During 2010/11 we have made a start on reducing our impact on the environment. In June 2010 we signed up to the 10:10 scheme. 10:10 is a global initiative which over 186 countries have signed up to. The principal of 10:10 is to cut carbon emissions by 10% within a year starting in July 2010.
Whilst staff have been actively encouraged to watch their energy consumption in terms of turning out lights and switching off monitors and photocopiers, perhaps our biggest project was the refurbishment of our Bedford office. In October 2010 the refurbishment began in earnest! Our aim was to make the building more energy efficient as well as improving the environment for staff and clients alike. The refurbishment was completed in March 2011 - the building has been fully insulated and double glazed windows have been fitted. A new boiler has been installed and the whole building has been redecorated.
Although we have not hit our overall 10% reduction aim, we have cut our electricity use by 7% and we are on course to cut our gas use by more than 10% by July 2012. This was largely because the boilers and double glazing were not replaced until after the worst of a particularly cold winter! However, we have already seen a decrease in energy consumption as a result of the new boilers this winter.
